How to Calculate Your Grade: Step-by-Step Guide

The Basics of Grade Calculation

Calculating your grade doesn't have to be a mystery. At its core, a grade is simply a ratio of what you earned versus what was possible. Whether you're a student trying to stay on top of your GPA or a teacher grading a stack of midterms, understanding the math behind the marks is essential.

The Standard Formula

Percentage = (Points Earned ÷ Points Possible) × 100

Step 1: Gather Your Scores

Before you begin, make sure you have a clear list of all your assignments, quizzes, and exams. Note down both the score you received and the total points that were available for each item.

Step 2: Sum Your Points

Add up all the points you've earned across all assignments. Then, add up all the possible points for those same assignments. For example, if you had two quizzes worth 20 points each and you scored 18 and 19, your earned sum is 37 and your possible sum is 40.

Step 3: Perform the Division

Divide your earned sum by your possible sum. In our example: 37 ÷ 40 = 0.925.

Step 4: Convert to Percentage

Multiply the result by 100 to get your percentage: 0.925 × 100 = 92.5%. According to most grading scales, this is a solid A-.

Handling Weighted Grades

Many classes use "weighted" grades, where exams count for more than homework. In this case, you must multiply your average in each category by the category's weight. Our Weighted Grade Calculator can handle this complex math for you instantly.
