How to Calculate Your Final Exam Grade

The "Final Panic": Calculating Your Needed Score

Finals week is the most stressful time of the academic year. The most common question students ask is: "What do I need on the final to get an A?" Understanding how to calculate your final grade requirement can turn anxiety into a clear study plan.

The Final Grade Formula

Final Score Needed = [Goal - (Current Grade × (100% - Final Weight%))] / Final Weight%

Step 1: Know Your Current Standing

Look at your online gradebook or syllabus. You need to know your current average in the class before the final exam. For example, if you have an 88% average going into the final.

Step 2: Find the Final Exam Weight

Every course is different. Some finals are worth 10% of your grade, while others might be worth 40%. This percentage is crucial. If your final is worth 20%, the rest of your coursework is worth 80%.

Step 3: Set Your Target Goal

What grade are you aiming for? If you want an A-, you likely need a 90% total. If you just want to pass with a C, you might need a 70%.

Step 4: The Math in Action

Let's use an example. Current grade: 85%. Final weight: 25%. Goal: 90%.

  • Points already earned: 85 × 0.75 = 63.75
  • Points still needed: 90 - 63.75 = 26.25
  • Calculation: 26.25 ÷ 0.25 (the final weight) = 105%

In this case, a 90% goal is impossible without extra credit. You might want to adjust your goal to an 88% or see your teacher.
